Once upon a time, beauty fanatics were categorized into two groups: the skincare-obsessed or the makeup junkies. Thanks to new skincare-infused makeup products coming out on the market, ladies no longer have to pigeonhole themselves into one fan group—it’s that much easier to add extra care to your skin while wearing makeup and looking flawless at the same time.
And that’s exactly what Sébastien Tardif, celebrity makeup artist and co-founder of Veil Cosmetics, had in mind when creating his line of good-for-your-skin complexion products. “It was important for me to create a foundation that had skincare benefits in it, because if you're going to be wearing a foundation all day, you might as well add skincare benefits to it, like hydration, calming, soothing, and plumping properties,” says Tardif. “It’s a nice bonus—like an insurance policy for the skin.”
Skincare-infused foundation ingredients
One of Veil Cosmetics’ hero products, the Sunset Skin Liquid Foundation is so much more than a beautiful base for your face. The formulation includes white water lily extract to help brighten, soothe and calm the complexion, cinnamon bark extract for plumping, and the humectant glycerin to keep skin hydrated and supple throughout the day. “Sunset Skin Liquid Foundation has ethylhexyl palmitate, which is a great emollient, as well as vitamin E, which works as an antioxidant to protect your skin from environmental damage,” explains Tardif.
Hydrating vs. mattifying makeup: Which is better for your skin?
According to Tardif, it really depends on which ingredients are in the makeup, and what your skin type is. “Mattifying makeup can be very drying, and they are usually geared towards those with oilier skin,” says Tardif. “The typical moisturizing foundations will have oil in them, and depending on the amount of oil, they could be problematic as the foundation will eventually move, crease, and disappear.”
It’s also important to note that an oil-based foundation probably won’t help treat dry skin in the long run. “Oil is not a moisturizer—it helps keep the hydration in the skin by creating a barrier or cushion on top of the skin, but if you don’t have any moisture in the skin currently, it won’t do much.”
Rather than an oil-based foundation, the Sunset Skin Liquid Foundation, Sunset Light Primer Serum, and Complexion Fix Concealer are all specifically water-based, oil-free, and cater to all skin types. “Dry skin types that use a dry skin type skincare regimen can use these products as a great complement to their regimen,” explains Tardif. “I have enough ingredients in the formulations to keep your skin hydrated so it creates a perfect balance.”
On the other hand, if you have very oily skin, the Veil Cosmetics complexion products will be amenable to your skin as they won’t exacerbate oiliness. “These products will actually help control the oiliness by keeping your skin satisfied in terms of moisture, so that your skin won’t feel like it needs to produce more oil to compensate,” says Tardif.
